Buffs Drop High Scoring Contest To Aggies, 16-13, Tuesday
March 28, 2006
The West Texas A&M University baseball team could not move to .500 on the season after dropping a nine inning affair to Oklahoma Panhandle State University Tuesday afternoon, 16-13, at Potter County Memorial. The Buffs gave up five runs in the first inning and never caught back up to the Aggies.
WTAMU drops to 15-17, while OPSU advances to 2-28 this season.
The Buffs were down 14-4 and facing the ten-run rule in the bottom of the seventh when junior outfielder Cody Dean hit a bases-loaded double, cutting the deficit to 14-6. WTAMU scored six runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth, but could not stop the Aggies from scoring seven runs in the last three innings.
In a game full of offense, Dean went 3-3 with four runs scored, two runs batted in and two walks. Sophomore infielder Brian Schupp went 2-5 with an inside-the-park home run to center field and also a triple in the game. Schupp had seven RBI and scored twice.
Ten pitchers threw between both teams.
Sophomore Josh Palmer, who allowed five runs in the first inning, was saddled with the loss after only getting one out in the inning. Making his first start of the season, Palmer moves to 0-2.
Senior Brandon Wright had the best outing on the mound for the Buffs, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two earned runs and kept the Aggies from scoring from the third inning until the sixth.
The Buffs will stay at home this weekend, March 31-April 1, to host Texas A&M University-Kingsville for the first Lone Star Conference South Division series of the season. The Javelinas will enter the weekend 25-5 on the season and atop the LSC South. First pitch has been changed to 1 p.m. Friday, March 31. Saturday's twinbill will start at Noon.
