ABILENE, Texas - The West Texas A&M baseball team lost both games of a double header against Abilene Christian on Saturday, dropping the first game by a 3-2 margin in 10 innings followed by a tough 23-2 loss in the nightcap. Senior Ben Edge was the most productive Buff on offense as he went 4-for-6 at the plate with one double and one RBI.

Sophomore Billy Zeleznak (2-1) took the loss for the Buffs in game one as he pitched nine innings and allowed three runs - all earned - while striking out three. In game two, redshirt freshman Tyler Lewis (0-2) took the loss as he allowed eight runs and walked five batters in one and a third innings.

WT returns to Abilene Christian's Crutcher Scott Field to close out the series with a double header on Sunday, with first pitch slated for Noon.

Game #1 Recap - Abilene Christian 3, West Texas A&M 2 (10 innings)

West Texas A&M opened the scoring in the first as the Buffs recorded two runs on three hits, with Darby Walker singling to lead off the inning. Brian Schupp laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Walker who then reached third on a wild pitch with Will McLaughlin at the plate. McLaughlin hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Walker, followed by a double down the left field line by Edge.

Senior Justin Graham came up next and struck out but reached on a past ball as Edge took third, then sophomore designated hitter Eric Lensing hit an RBI single to center field which scored Edge.

 

 

Starting ACU pitcher Ben Maynard was able to get out of the inning as he and Zeleznak embarked on a battle on the mound as the game went to extra innings and entered the tenth with the score tied at 2-2.

William Uechi led off the inning with a single to left field for the Wildcats, followed by a single through the right side by Anthony Walsh; Brandon Hickey replaced Zeleznak at the rubber for the Buffs following Walsh's hit. ACU's Thomas Bumpass sacrifice bunted to advance the runners to second and third base then Hickey intentionally walked J.J. Pacheco to load the bases.

Matt Spotanski knocked in the game winning score with a single through the left side, winning the game for Abilene Christian.

Game #2 Recap - Abilene Christian 23, West Texas A&M 2

ACU exploded to score 16 runs in the first three innings of game two as the Buffs could not get their bats going. Schupp went 2-for-4 with one run and McLaughlin went 1-for-3 and also scored one run.

For Abilene Christian, Spotanski went 4-for-5 with two triples, two singles, two runs and two RBI while Mike Elkerson went 3-for-6 with two singles, a triple, one run and three RBI. Additionally, Cameron Watten went 2-for-5 with one double, one triple, two runs and three RBI.
