Buffs Sweep Sul Ross to Remain Unbeaten
Feb. 7, 2009 ALPINE, Texas - The West Texas A&M baseball team continued their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated the Lobos of Sul Ross, 11-6 and 11-1 in doubleheader action at Kokernot Field in Alpine, Texas to improve to 3-0 on the season. The WT offense struck early and often as the Buffs pounded out 22 runs on 25 hits to complete the sweep against the Lobos. "I thought we hit the ball extremely well all weekend" said head coach Matt Vanderburg "The goal of any team this early in the season is to improve as the games go by, and I think that's what we're doing." West Texas A&M returns to the diamond on Feb. 10 as they travel to Hobbs, New Mexico for a doubleheader against College of the Southwest, first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CST. Game 1 Recap: West Texas A&M 11, Sul Ross 6 Coty Wilson (Senior, China Spring, Texas) led the way at the plate for the Buffs, going 2 for 4 with four RBI including three run homer over the left center field fence to give the Buffs the 11-6 victory. WT's bats pounded out 10 hits in the game one victory. "Our offense picked up where we left off after Friday night, our defense bounced back from a crucial error early in the game to pull out a good win" said Vanderburg. Buffs righty Brandon Hickey (Senior, Odessa, Texas) picked up the win for the Buffs on the mound, allowing only one run on three Lobo hits during his two innings of work. Game 2 Recap: West Texas A&M 11, Sul Ross 1 Pitching was a strong point for the Buffs in game two, as three WT pitchers allowed only one run off of seven Lobo hits to seal the 11-1 victory in Alpine, Texas. Spencer Head (Sophomore, Colleyville, Texas) picked up the win on the mound, giving up one run of five hits while striking out two Sul Ross batters.
"Our pitching was great during game two, Head did a tremendous job keeping the Sul Ross hitters guessing, and our offense was able to give our pithers some confidence, which really helps" said Vanderburg. At the plate, WT was led by shortstop Steve Decker (Junior, Colorado Springs, Colorado) as he went 3 for 3 at the dish, scoring two runs while driving in two more. |
