Big Ninth Inning Dooms Buffs in Loss to St. Edward’s Friday Afternoon

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #6 West Texas A&M 3, St. Edward's 13
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 40-13, St. Edward's 34-20
 
  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)
 
  • The Lead: A total of 13 runs over the final four innings doomed the top-seeded West Texas A&M Buffs in a 13-3 loss to No. 3-seed St. Edward's Friday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA South Central Regional. 
 
    
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • St. Edward's put two on the top of the second courtesy of a single from Blake Holub and a two out walk to Robbie Lammons, but a fly out to right ended the threat as the Hilltoppers left two stranded.
  • The Buffs turned their second double play in three innings to preserve a scoreless game in the third.
  • After two quick outs in the third, senior Bodie Bryan hit a high fly to right as SEU right fielder lost the ball in the sun as Bryan stretched it into a triple.Senior Jimmy Cubillos doubled to left center for a 1-0 lead.
  • A pair of two out hits by the Hilltoppers put two on in the top of the fifth for the top of the order and, on a 0-2 count, junior Darin Cook fanned William Hairston for the third out and Cook's fourth K of the game getting out of the jam.
  • Derek Ramos began the top of the sixth with a double to right center for the Hilltoppers and an out moved Ramos to third.A single to right from Holob plated Ramos for a 1-1 score and a single to center put runners at the corners with one out.A ground out by Dylan Mankin plated Holub for a 2-1 SEU lead.
  • On a 1-2 count with two out in the top of the seventh, William Hariston took Cook deep for a 3-1 score for his ninth home run of the season and third hit of the game.
  • Junior Braden Baker relieved Cook for the eighth as Cook went seven innings, allowing nine hits, three earned runs, walked one and fanned six.
  • Baker fanned two in the eighth brining the top of the order up for the Buffs in the bottom of the frame, but the Buffs were unable to get a hit in the bottom of the inning as SEU starter Juan Cortina retired his tenth-straight.
  • Lammons tripled off the left field wall for a 4-1 lead in the top of the ninth and Zach Schindler singled off the left field wall for a 5-1 lead.SEU loaded the bases with nobody out.Following an out, Blake Alexander doubled to right center, clearing the bases for an 8-1 lead.Trevor Giselbach singled home the ninth run of the game as the Hilltoppers batted around, making the score 13-1, plating ten runs in the inning marking the second time in the last three games the Buffs have given up double-digit runs in an inning.
  • With two out in the bottom of the ninth, freshman Tommy Williams stroked his first collegiate home run – a two run shot to left for a 13-3 score. Prior to the home run, Cortina had retired 11-straight Buffs as it was WT's first hit since the fifth inning.
  • The Buffs would get no more, falling 13-3.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Cortina pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, walked three and fanned seven as he improved to 6-6 on the year.
  • Cook took the loss for the Buff, falling to 9-4 on the year as he went seven innings, allowing nine hits, three earned runs, walked one and fanned six.
  • Hairston went 5 of 6 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the way for the Hilltoppers, while Schindler was 3 of 5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Williams led the way for the Buffs going 2 for 4 with one run scored and two RBI, including the home run.

  • The Buffs will face the loser of Friday's evening game at 11 a.m. Saturday in an elimination game.
