No. 11 Buffs Win School-Record 30th Game; Advance to Second-Straight Sweet Sixteen

  • Score: No. 11 West Texas A&M 93, Texas A&M-Commerce 70

  • The Lead: The No. 11-ranked and top-seeded West Texas A&M Buffs scored 60 points for the third time this season in the second half and blew open a five-point halftime lead over No. 5-seed Texas A&M-Commerce in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Central Regional for a 93-70 win Sunday evening.  The Buffs improved to 30-3 on the year, marking the most wins in a season in school-history.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • In a very tightly contested semifinal battle throughout the first half as neither team held more than a five point lead with WT taking a 33-28 lead into halftime.
  • The half saw six ties and five lead changes as TAMUC held a four-point advantage with over 11 minutes left at 18-14 on a triple from Reggie Reid, but the Buffs quickly erased the deficit with a tip-in from junior Ryan Quaid and a triple from junior Gach Gach put WT up 19-18 with nine minutes left in the half.
  • Gach later tied the game with another triple with 7:27 left in the half.
  • A triple from senior Jordan Evans put WT up 31-28 breaking the sixth tie of the half at the 2:59 mark as TAMUC didn't score in the final 3:28 of the half.
  • WT got things going in the second half as Evans buried a triple for a 36-29 lead just 40 seconds in.
  • Senior David Chavlovich scored a triple for his first points of the contest and a 39-31 lead with 18:11 left as he scored 16 points all in the second half.
  • Following the Chavlovich triple, Prim pushed the lead to ten for the first time on a layup.
  • TAMUC cut the deficit to four on an Aaron Horn triple, but the Buffs pushed the lead back to ten again, capped with a Chavlovich triple for a 50-40 lead with 15:07 left.
  • TAMUC's Daquane Wildford cut the deficit to nine at 55-46, but the Buffs used an Evans triple to start an 11-0 run capped with Chavlovich's third triple of the half and a 65-46 lead with 10:55 left.
  • Later, Evans pushed the lead to a game-high 27 at 86-59 with 4:04 left as the Buffs went on for the 93-70 victory.
  • WT ended TAMUC's season for the second-year in the NCAA Tournament, last season the Buffs downed the Lions 97-86 in Golden, Colo.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT freshman Gaige Prim had 12 points off the bench on a perfect 4 of 4 from the field and 4 of 4 from the line leading all players in scoring, while WT drained five triples and went 12 of 28 from the field (.429).
  • Prim made all four free throws for the Buffs.
  • TAMUC was led by eight points from Rooks with two triples, while the Lions shot 11 of 24 from the field (.458), 4 of 12 from range and just 2 of 5 from the line.
  • WT dominated the glass, 20-12 and 7-0 on second chance points.
  • For the second half, WT shot lights out, going 16 of 26 for 61.5 percent and shot 28 of 54 from the field for the game for a .519 clip, while going 13 of 33 from beyond the arc – eight of 16 in the second half and was 24 of 30 from the line.
  • Prim had a career-high 24 points on a career-best 9 of 10 from the field and was 6 of 7 from the line, leading five Buffs in double figures.
  • Gach and Quaid each registered double-doubles as Quaid had 16 points with 11 rebounds for his league-leading 15th double-double of the season, while Gach had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Evans finished with 18 points – all on triples, while Chavlovich had 16, second half points with eight assists and two steals.
  • TAMUC was led by 20 points from Willie Rooks on 6 of 11 from the field with four triples and four free throws as the Lions shot 41.5 percent from the field and were 10 of 26 from beyond the arc, while going 16 of 23 from the line.
  • WT held a 38-24 lead in rebounding, while leading 28-16 in points in the paint.
  • The 30 wins surpasses the previous mark of 29 set during the 1940-41 season (29-6).
 
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Buffs now will play No. 2-seed UT Permian Basin for a berth in the 2018 NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, S.D., as the teams will play the South Central Region championship Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the First United Bank Center.
  • WT and UTPB were the top two teams during the regular season in conference play, met in the conference championship game and this will be the fourth time the teams have played this season.
