CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M freshman kicker Alex Schrag and senior linebacker Daelin Young were honored by the Lone Star Conference as the LSC Special Teams and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Monday.
Schrag went 3-for-3 in field goals and hit the game-winner with eight seconds left Saturday as the Buffs upset seventh-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo, 24-21. Schrag also handled the kickoff duties with four kickoffs for 224 yards. His three field goals all came in the second half and he also tallied one extra-point kick.
The Colony, Texas, native, Schrag, now is 5-of-6 in field goals and 2-for-2 in extra-points this season as he leads the nation in field goals per game at 2.50, ranks 26th in field goal percentage (0.833) and ranks seventh in the LSC in scoring with 17 points.
Young, a native of Mesquite, Texas, had another outstanding game at linebacker as he recorded nine solo tackles and forced a fumble in the win Saturday. Young's forced fumble led to the Buffs' first of two touchdowns in the game as it began the 21-unaswered point comeback for the win late in the second quarter. He leads the team with 15 total tackles, 14 solo sops with three tackles for loss (16) and two sacks (15).
He ranks 27th nationally and second in the LSC in sacks at 1.0 per game, while leading the league and 29th nationally in solo tackles at 7.0 per game. He ranks fifth in the LSC and 29th nationally in forced fumbles at 0.5 per game. Young also ranks fifth in the LSC in tackles for loss at 1.5 per game.
The Buffs open the 2017 LSC slate Saturday at 3 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium versus UT Permian Basin to close out a season-opening, three-game home stand.
