Meet Results / WT Results *All times stand with possibility of altitude and/or track size conversion when considered for national qualification (Alamosa, Colo. 7,547 ft.)ALAMOSA, Colo. - The West Texas A&M women's track and field team defeated Adams State in the Grizzly-Buffalo Clash while the men's team finished second. The Lady Buffs edged the Grizzlies 79-73 while the Buffs fell 82-68. The teams combined for nine victories, one school record, two freshman records and eleven all-time marks on the second day of the Grizzly-Buffalo Clash.
"This kind of meet is one of the highlights of my career," head coach
Darren Flowers said. "This is something we would like to do annually. The athletes really seemed to enjoy the experience. We got some really good performances. I think that comes from every one cheering for each other and competing to help the team win. I am excited with all of the performances that we had this weekend."
The Lady Buffs picked up right where they left off on Friday picking up four victories and three runner-up finishes to secure the victory over Adams State.
"We had some really big marks on the women's side especially in the shot put and 4 x 400 relay," Flowers said. "Those are performances that should improve where we stand nationally."
Nikolina Hrelec in only her second race for the Lady Buffs destroyed the freshman and school records in the 800 meters. Her altitude adjusted time of 2:13.95 broke the old indoor record by nearly a second and a half. She now has the 12
th fastest time in the nation and fastest in the Lone Star Conference.
"Adams State had pacers and Nikolina took advantage of that;" Flowers added. "I am really excited about the future as she is just getting back to full training."
Joining Hrelec in the record breaking was
Norma Cunigan in the shot put. Cunigan tied for first with her sister in the shot put with a mark of 14.06 meters. That is the second time in two days that she has broken a record as she broke the freshman record in the hammer throw yesterday.
Bailey Trimmell finished third in the same event with a new personal best mark of 12.62 meters.
"It's great to see them pushing each other," Flowers noted. "I hope they both get a shot at competing at the national meet."
Shanice Cameron finished second in the 60 meter dash with a time 7.61 with
Jasmine Pitts finishing third in 7.66. Both Cameron and Pitts now have provisional qualifying marks in both the 60 and 200 meters.
Victoria Rausch won the hurdles in a time of 8.71 finishing nearly a half second ahead of the second place. Trianna McCallister was third in a time of 9.35 with
Sarah Climer in fourth.
Jessie Thomas finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.63.
Sierra Spinler picked up crucial points in the mile finishing sixth in a time of 5:36.83.
The quartet of
Sommer Wilder,
Alba Casanovas, Pitts and Cameron picked up a provisional mark in the 4 x 400 meter relay. Their time of is the fourth-fastest in school history
Malika Ouedraogo won the long jump with the sixth-best mark in school history, 5.49 meters.
Haily Berry continues to jump well as she set a new personal-best while finishing second with a mark of 5.27 meters.
Libby Strickland picked up the victory in the high jump with a clearance of 1.69 meters while Cayli and
Carri Yarbrough finished second and third.
The Buffs picked up five victories of their own including wins in the heptathlon, 800 meters, 400 meters, long jump and 4 x400 meter relay but were unable to overtake ASU. The Grizzlies were able to garner first place finishes in the mile, 3,000 meters and shot put to secure victory.
Grant McLain,
Coalson Brown, and J.R. Sullivan led a sweep in the heptathlon. McLain was the victor in a personal-best score of 4,267 with Brown in second with 4,163 points. Those are the fourth and seventh-best performance in school history.
Alexander Korn ran away from the field in the 800 meters in a provisionally qualifying time of 1:52.62. That time is the third-fastest time in school history as Korn now owns the four fastest times in school history.
Steven Cooper ran the 400 meters for the first time this season and picked up his first victory. Cooper's time of 49.59 is the fastest time in the Lone Star Conference this season. The 4 x 400m relay quartet of
Theo Piniau, Cooper,
Alex Schaffer and
Daniel Gyasi ran away from the Grizzlies in route to running 3:18.05.
Charles Mason picked up the win in the long jump over Samuel Bilderbeck of ASU with his mark of 6.52 meters.
Todd Handley had another strong outing the 60 meter dash with his second place finish. His time of 6.89 is the 10
th fastest time in school history.
Trevor Dennis was fifth in 7.16 seconds.
Tyson Wieland was the top Buff finisher in the mile finishing third overall. He crossed the line in altitude adjusted time of 4:18.32 with
Zach Daniel and
Blake Whalen finishing right behind in fourth and fifth.
Geoffrey Kipchumba ran the third-fastest 3,000 meters crossing the finish line in 8:22.59 and finishing seventh.
"I thought that Geoffrey competed well although we didn't get the time we wanted," Flowers said. "He was a little tired coming off the DMR from last night. Tyson ran a strong race and I think that he has the ability to run even faster right now."
Zach Weatherly had a strong performance as he placed third in the shot put and picked up a provisional mark. His mark of 16.67 meters is the seventh-best mark in school history.
Duke Kicinski was fourth with his throw of 15.05 meters and Jon Ferrin was fifth in 13.10 meters.
Paolo Lazaric and
Brandon Grove both cleared in 1.97 meters in the high jump and finished second and third respectively.
Jimmie Vaughn and Zach McCaley had a strong performance in the pole vault as they went 2-3. Vaughn cleared 4.11 meters while McCaley cleared 3.66 meters.
Day OneThe West Texas A&M men's and women's track and field programs broke a combined three school records, three provisional marks and four victories on the first day of the Grizzly-Buffalo Clash.The Lady Buffs will enter the final day of competition with a five point lead over ASU thanks to three first place finishes. The Buffs will need to make up some ground as ASU holds a 22-18 advantage heading into Saturday.
"The one thing that is exciting about this meet is the atmosphere," head coach
Darren Flowers said. "We are competing for a team victory so all of the kids are encouraging their teammates. It is great preview of conference as we are going against some great competition. The way the meet has been run has been top class and we hope to continue this meet into the future."
Courtney Head,
Shanice Cameron and the men's distance medley relay all broke school records on the first day of competition. Head continued her strong indoor season breaking her own school record that she set last week. Her mark of 51-11.25 (15.83m) was good enough for second place. Cameron ran away from the field to win the 200 meter in an altitude adjusted time of 24.69. That is the 11
th fastest time in the nation this season.
"Shanice really had an outstanding performance," Flowers added. "For her to run that fast this early in the season is awesome. She always works hard and deserves that record. Courtney is a testament of hard work and determination. She was a walk-on and is now the best weight thrower of all-time."
The distance medley relay of the quartet of
Jamie Taylor-Caldwell,
Daniel Gyasi,
Alexander Korn and
Geoffrey Kipchumba put on a show in the distance medley destroying the previous school record by running an altitude adjusted time of 9:47.86. That is the third-fastest time trailing only Adams State and Colorado School of Mines.
"I couldn't be more excited for these guys," Flowers said. "I didn't think that we were going to run that fast but they competed and weren't afraid to stick with them. They were with ASU the whole race. It is also a testament to how good Adams (State) is that they can run that fast as well."
Cameron,
Lacy Harris and
Haily Berry all won their respective events and scored a combined total of 15 points. But it was
Libby Strickland who got the meet off to a good start for the Lady Buffs. She started by winning four of the five events in the heptathlon to score a provisional mark of 3,619 points. She broke the facility record in the high jump during a heptathlon with her clearance of 5-07.25 (1.71m).She finished second overall to score three points for the Lady Buffs while
Sarah Climer finished third with 3,084 points for two points. Trianna McCallisteer (2,923 pts.) finished fourth while
Lindy Pasley and
Katie Beth Stafford were sixth and seventh respectively.
Jasmine Pitts finished second in the 200 meters with the seventh-fastest time in school history and provisional mark of 24.97.
Bri Leeper was fourth in 25.74 with
Sommer Wilder in fourth in a time of 26.21.
For the first time in three weeks,
Lacy Harris didn't break the pole vault record but she did pick up a win and five points for the Lady Buffs. She cleared 11-05.75 (3.50m) which is a new facility record and is the third best mark in school history.
Caley Barnard was third with a clearance of 10-11.75 (3.35m), that is the sixth-best mark of all-time.
Haily Berry won the triple jump with her mark of 37-10.50 (11.54m) and picked up five points
Holly Cunigan finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 14.10. She was followed by
Bailey Trimmell in fourth with
Norma Cunigan and
Abby Tieken fifth and sixth respectively.
On the men's side,
Trevor Dennis placed second overall in a time of 22.41. Theo Pinau finished fourth in his first 200 meter of the year in 22.41 with
Alex Schaffer in fifth and
Todd Handley in sixth.
Zach Weatherly picked up a victory in the weight throw with a mark of 54-09.50 (16.70m). That is the sixth-best throw in school history and he now owns nine of the ten best marks all-time. Jon Ferrin finished fourth with a mark of 46-01.50 (14.06m).
Grant McLain will take a lead into the final day of the heptathlon with 2,507 points after a strong finish in the 60 meter dash and long jump. Following close behind is
Coalson Brown with 2,494 points. He broke the facility record for the high jump in an heptathlon with a clearance of 6-06-.75 (2.00m). J.R. Sullivan sits third with 2,205 points and will look to have a strong final day.
SCHEDULE: The men's heptathlon will start at 9 a.m. with the 60 meter hurdles and will follow a rolling schedule. The women's high jump will start at 11 a.m. while the track events will start with the men's 60 meter hurdles at 12:05 p.m.
SCORING: The scoring will follow the default NCAA two team format rules. Individual events; 5, 3, 2, 1. Relay events; 5, 3. Only two individual entries per institution shall score. One relay per event per institution shall score.

NEXT UP: WT will make a return trip to Albuquerque, N.M. to participate in the Don Kirby Invitational. The Buffs and Lady Buffs performed well in their first trip to the ABQ Convention Center. It will be the final meet before the Lone Star Conference Championships in Alamosa, Colo. on Feb. 20 and 21.
