ALAMOSA, Colo. – For the third straight year, the West Texas A&M women's team will travel home with a shiny piece of hardware. The Lady Buffs won their third straight Lone Star Conference Indoor Championship with 153 points. They defeated Angelo State who started Sunday will a slim lead but were unable to hold off WT. The Buffs finished third with 146 points with Texas A&M Commerce taking home the title.
"We as a track team are a family,"
Darren Flowers said. "The women's title is a testament to how hard our teams work on a daily basis. We can't overlook the coaches; we couldn't have done it without them. There were too many outstanding individual performances to focus on one. I am proud of both the men's and women's team for this weekend."
The Lady Buffs were led by the three individual titles won by
Nikolina Hrelec,
Norma Cunigan,
Malika Ouedraogo and a win by the 4 x 400 meter relay. They are the first school in LSC conference history to win three straight titles.
Hrelec picked up her first individual title in the 800 meters running 2:16.93. She sat behind Klaudi Szcych of Eastern New Mexico until the bell lap where she used her kicked to secure victory. She returned to the track a few hours later to place fourth in the 3,000 meters.
Sierra Spinler finished sixth in both the 800 meters and mile run.
Norma Cunigan won the shot put followed by her sister
Holly Cunigan. Norma's mark of 14.71 meters was nearly .50 meters more than her sister.
Abby Tieken finished seventh with a mark of 12.78 meters.
Ouedraogo won the triple jump for the second straight season with
Haily Berry finishing fourth. Her mark of 11.88 meters edged Molly Martinez and Aricela Alvarez of TAMUK.
The quartet of
Shanice Cameron,
Alba Casanovas,
Sommer Wilder and
Jessie Thomas came from behind to win the 4 x400 meter relay. Thomas passed TAMUC on the final leg of the race and held her off for the title.
Cameron tied her own school record in the 60 meters, 6.84, finishing fourth in the final. She came by to finish third in the 200 meters.
Jasmine Pitts ran well in both the 60 and 200 meter finals finishing fifth and sixth respectively.
On the men's side, Texas A&M-Commerce won the team title with 210 points followed Texas A&M-Kingsville. WT finished third with 146 with three individual and relay champions.
Daniel Gyasi,
Geoffrey Kipchumba and the 4 x 400 meter relay teams were all crowned as the LSC's best.
Gyasi blew away the competition in the 400 meters running a facility and championship meet record of 47.04 seconds. That time is the fastest time in the nation this season and he now owns the school and conference record in that event.
Theo Piniau finished seven in the same final.
Gyasi came back to anchor the 4 x 400 meter in the final event of the meet with Piniau,
Alex Schaffer and Tobia Labhi running the first three legs.
Geoffrey Kipchumba won his second title of the weekend in the 3,000 meters after separating himself from
Blake Whalen with two laps to go. Whalen finished second for the second time this weekend after finishing second in the 5,000 meters last night. Earlier in the day he finished third in the mile run winning the slow heat in a time of 4:13.55.
Jamie Taylor-Caldwell finished fourth in the second heat and fifth overall in a time.
Alexander Korn came in second in the 800 meters after leading for a majority of the race.
Jacob Suchors ran well in his first ever final as a Buff finishing seventh.
Steven Cooper finished third in the 200 meters behind Kenneth Jackson and Javier Lopez of TAMUK. His time of 21.67 is the eighth-fastest time in school history.
Todd Handley finished third in the 60 meters running 6.89.
Coalson Brown was the top finisher for the Buffs in the heptathlon in fifth with 4,390 points. That is the fourth best mark in school history.
Grant McLain finished eighth to pick up one point for the Buffs.
Zach Weatherly finished third in the shot put with a mark of 16.68 meters while
Duke Kicinski finished sixth throwing 15.24 meters.
SCHEDULE: A select few individuals and relays will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Pittsburg, Kan. on March 11-12. The outdoor season will begin with the Texas Tech Open on March 24.
Day OneThe West Texas A&M women's track and field are in second place with 57 points after the first day of the Lone Star Conference Championships while the men's team sits in third. The Lady Buffs were led by
Libby Strickland,
Lacy Harris and
Courtney Head who picked up victories.
Geoffrey Kipchumba was the lone individual champion for the Buffs in the 5,000 meters.
The Lady Buffs finished the first day of competition trailing Angelo State by 2.5 points, 59.50-57. Texas A&M-Commerce sits third with 35.50 points with Tarleton State fourth (29 points), Texas A&M-Kingsville fifth (19), Eastern New Mexico sixth (18) and Midwestern State seventh (13).
Strickland picked up the first victory for the Lady Buffs in the heptathlon with a score of 3617, which is the sixth-most in school history. Her performance was highlighted with clearing 1.72m in the high jump and 9.07 in the 60 meter hurdles.
Harris won the pole vault in a jump off over teammate
Caley Barnard at 3.50 meters. They both cleared 3.50 meters on the first try but were unable to clear 3.65 meters. So the height was taken down to 3.50 meters where Harris cleared while Barnard was unable to prolong the competition.
Head broke her own school record in the weight throw for the second time this season in winning the event. Her mark of 54-4.50 (16.57m) is not only a school record by nearly a meter but is a provisional mark.
Norma Cunigan finished sixth in the same event to pick up points for the Lady Buffs.
Malika Ouedraogo and Strickland picked up a combined 12 points for the Lady Buffs in the long jump. Ouedraogo was second with a mark of 18-11.25 (5.77m) while Strickland finished with a mark of 18-01.50 (5.52m).
Shanice Cameron and
Jasmine Pitts qualified for the finals in both the 60 and 200 meters. Cameron broke the school record in the 60 meters finishing third in a time of 7.64. Pitts ran 7.72 which is the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Victoria Rausch was the top qualifier in the 60 meter hurdles running 8.68 which is the sixth-fastest time in school history. Alba Casanova qualified for the final of the 60 meter hurdles in part to her 9.21.
Sommer Wilder qualified for the final in the 400 meters while both
Sierra Spinler and
Nikolina Hrelec moved on in the 800 meters.
The Buffs will look to gain ground after day one of competition trailing both TAMUC (85 points) and TAMUK (55 points). WT sits third with 46 points with TSU (38 points) in fourth and ENMU (4 points) in fifth.
The Buffs put five in the top seven highlighted by Kipchumba who won his first LSC indoor individual championship. He was challenged by
Blake Whalen until 400 meters to go when he put distance between the two.
Tyson Wieland finished fourth with
Zach Daniels in fifth and Daren Allen was seventh.
The distance medley relay finished second picking up eight points finishing in a time 10:36.49. The quartet of
Jacob Suchors,
Alexander Korn,
Tobia Lahbi and
Jamie Taylor-Caldwell finished second to a Tarleton State team that ran a provisionally qualifying time.
Paolo Lazaric and
Coalson Brown both picked up points in the high jump. Lazaric finished sixth with his clearance of 6-7.5 (2.02m) while Brown was seventh clearing 6-5.50 (1.97m).
Zach Weatherly finished fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 53.8.25 (16.36m). That marks is the sixth best in school history.
Coalson Brown and
Grant McLain are in a position to score for the Buffs after day one of the heptathlon. Brown sits in sixth with 2,555 points while McLain is sixth in 2,553 points.
Lachie Calvert sits ninth with 2,392 points.
Todd Handley qualified for the final in the 60 meters running 6.90 which was the sixth-fastest time of the day.
Trevor Dennis and
Steven Cooper both qualified for the final in 200 meters where Cooper will enter having run the second-fastest time in the prelims.
Jacob Norris, who was named to the LSC All-Academic team on Friday, moved on in the 60 meter hurdles and will look to pick up major points in tomorrow's final.
Daniel Gyasi was the top qualifier in the 400 meters while
Theo Piniau picked up the last qualifying spot for tomorrow's final.
