First United Bank Buys Naming Rights to WTAMU Event Center
May 26, 2005
West Texas A&M University's multi-purpose athletic and convocation center has a new name: The First United Bank Event Center.
"I am thrilled," Dr. Russell C. Long, WTAMU president, said. "We have two quality organizations working together, and it doesn't get any better than that. It's good news for the University, the bank and the communities we serve."
The naming privilege, effective for 15 years beginning today, the date of official approval by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, was awarded to First United Bank for a $1 million contribution. Previous donations by the bank and its board of directors to WTAMU total more than $900,000.
A special ceremony to unveil the signage at the facility is being planned for later this summer.
"Many of our directors and shareholders have a great history with the University, and we are extremely excited about this opportunity to further our longstanding relationship with West Texas A&M University," Michael L. Bain, executive vice president of First United Bank, said.
First United Bank is one of the fastest growing and strongest banking organizations in the state of Texas with locations in Amarillo (3), Dimmitt, Earth, Littlefield, Lubbock (2), Seagraves, Seminole and Sudan. A new location will open in Canyon in early summer.
The First United Bank Event Center opened its doors Jan. 26, 2002, and quickly developed a reputation as one of the premier multi-purpose facilities in the region. The arena seats approximately 4,700 fans for sporting events and can accommodate more than 5,800 for events such as commencements and concerts. It is home to the Buff and Lady Buff basketball teams and has hosted concerts featuring big-name entertainers like Bill Cosby, Martina McBride and Willie Nelson.
